ABC News Weekly Ratings Release: September 9 - 15, 2019

ABC News’ “World News Tonight with David Muir” finished as the No. 1 evening newscast in Total Viewers (8.091 million) for the week of Sept. 9, 2019, based on Live + Same Day Data from Nielsen Media Research. “World News Tonight” outdelivered “NBC Nightly News” (7.561 million) by 530,000, increasing its advantage year to year by 4% (vs. 509,000 for w/o 9/10/18) and winning for the 50th time in the 51 weeks of the season.

On Monday, “World News Tonight” featured Muir’s exclusive reporting from Iraq with U.S. forces during an operation against ISIS fighters.

“World News Tonight” cut its year-to-year gaps (w/o 9/10/18) with “NBC Nightly News” in both Adults 25-54 (-14% – 141,000 vs. 164,000) and Adults 18-49 (-50% – 57,000 vs. 113,000).

“World News Tonight” narrowed its Adults 18-49 margin “NBC Nightly News” from the previous week by 17% (57,000 vs. 69,000 for w/o 9/2/19).

For the week, “World News Tonight” defeated “CBS Evening News” (5.021 million, 916,000 and 649,000, respectively) by 3.070 million Total Viewers, by 552,000 Adults 25-54 and by 397,000 Adults 18-49.

Season to date, “World News Tonight” ranks No. 1 in Total Viewers for the 3rd year in a row after finishing as the No. 1 evening newscast for the last two seasons. “World News Tonight” (8.618 million) leads “NBC Nightly News” (7.957 million) by 661,000, delivering its largest Total Viewer lead in 23 years (since the 1995-1996 season) and “CBS Evening News” (5.852 million) by 2.766 million, posting its biggest Total Viewer advantage in at least 27 years (since at least the start of Nielsen electronic database in 1991-1992 season).

In addition, “World News Tonight” is cutting its season margins with NBC by more than half in both Adults 25-54 (-69% – 24,000 vs. 78,000) and Adults 18-49 (-76% – 20,000 vs. 84,000), posting its closest performances in both key Adult demos in 12 years—since the 2006-2007 season.

NOTE: Due the Democratic debate on Thursday (9/12/19), “World News Tonight” was retitled to “Wrld News Tonite.” The retitled telecast is excluded from the weekly averages. “World News Tonight” averages are based on four days (Mon-Wed and Fri).
