TOP 10: First to Be Cancelled in 2017-18
We are three weeks into the 2017-18 season and there are a few shows that are already on the clock for cancellation. But, in today's TV world, TV Networks are less ready to ax a show after just three or four weeks into the season. They will ride a series out until its commitment is done, or they move the series to Saturday nights. So, theres are the top 10 shows I think will either get cancelled, put on "Hiatus" or moved to the death night of Saturdays.
10) 9JKL (Mondays on CBS)
The newest CBS sitcom had the benefit of airing out of THE BIG BANG THEORY, on Monday Nights, but is already losing 50%, or more, of the audience from the hit comedy. What numbers is it getting now will quickly vanish once BIG BANG moves to Thursdays and KEVIN CAN WAIT is its lead in.
9) THE BRAVE (Mondays on NBC)
The military drama drops around 60% of viewers and demographic ratings that THE VOICE delivers to it, at 10 PM. It is currently second in its time slot, topping CBS drama, SCORPION, so NBC may wait until the 13 episode order is over and not renew the series for more episodes.
8) HOW TO GET A WAY WITH MURDER (Thursdays on ABC)
The veteran crime drama is shedding viewers this season. The season premiere, out of a 2-hour GREY'S ANATOMY, lost 50% of all viewers and nearly 60% of the A18-48 audience, It is last in its 10 PM time slot and there are no signs of rebound. 15 episodes were ordered, so I could see ABC running all 15 this fall and ready a new series when GREY'S and SCANDAL comeback from their winter hiatus, in 2018.
7) ONCE UPON A TIME (Fridays on ABC)
The veteran series is in a fresh reboot and viewers are not interested. Just 3.3 million viewers, and a 0.7 rating in Adults 18-49, tuned in for the first episode of the season and ranked third in the 8 PM hour, just ahead of an encore of THE VOICE. ABC has many other issues to deal with, so ABC may let the order commitment run its course and quietly not renew the series, come May 2018.
6) KEVIN (PROBABLY) SAVES THE WORLD (Tuesdays on ABC)
Tuesdays at 10 PM has traditionally been a horrible slot for ABC. The last 10 Years has produced some of the worst shows of the season, in the time slot. And, based on the early ratings, KEVIN will not correct that trend. The drama is last in the time slot, with somewhat weak ratings.
5) INHUMANS (Thursdays on NBC)
The latest Marvel series was on most people's cancellation list when it was first introduced at the May 2017 upfronts. Nothing about the series looked appealing and airing on Friday nights did not help it either. The series is the second lowest rated program on Friday nights, falling under three million viewers in the latest episode.
4) LAW & ORDER: TRUE CRIME (Tuesdays on NBC)
Hard to think a show that wins its time slot would be on the cancellation list, but its retention out of THIS IS US has to be a concern for NBC. nearly two-thirds of the total viewership from THIS IS US leave CBS when LAW & ORDER: TRUE CRIME comes on the air. Nearly 67% of the A18-34 and A18-49 audiences is dropped by the anthology series. Other crime anthology series, on broadcast and cable, have had rating struggles in the past year (ABC's TRUE CRIME) Once THE MENENDEZ MURDERS has completed it s run in November, don't expect another season of L&O: TC.
3) TEN DAYS IN THE VALLEY (Sundays on ABC)
This series will not be cancelled as its scheduled run is just 10 episodes, with the 4th coming this Sunday. But it will not bee seen again, on ABC, again, once the initial run is done. Its ratings are more align with The CW than it is for ABC. I could even see ABC waiting until after the November sweeps to burn off episodes in December.
2) THE EXORCIST (Fridays on FOX)
I was surprised the series got a second season from FOX, after what it drew in the ratings last season. But the numbers are even worst this season. Just 1.4 million viewers watched the October 6 episode and an encore of PENN & TELLER: FOOL US almost tie it, you know your ratings are really bad. FOX may rid the series out, but I could also see it moving to Saturday Nights and burned off after FOX College Football is done for the season.
1) THE TOY BOX (Sundays on ABC)
THE TOY BOX is the lowest rated, original series, this season. Just a 0.2 rating in Adults 18-34 and a 0.4 rating in Adults 18-49, in its last airing. As long is its initial order is not a small numbers, expect ABC to move AFV back to 7 PM and move THE TOY BOX off the schedule, by the November sweeps.
