Classic Ratings Review: TWIN PEAKS (Season Two - 1990-91)
After a successful first season, in the spring of 1990, TWIN PEAKS was a much anticipated series for the 1990-91 season. The two hour second season premiere pulled in 19.1 million viewers and a 20 share, ranking 41 on the week. In comparison, the #1 show of the week, CHEERS, pulled in 28.4 million viewers and a 31 share. The ratings were up from the first season finale and the best since episode three.The regular time slot for season two of TWIN PEAKS was Saturdays at 10 PM. Not the death slot that we view it today. THE GOLDEN GIRLS was a top 10 series, drawing 25 million viewers, while airing the night.
From the season premiere to the tenth airing of the season, TWIN PEAKS only once increases the ratings over the previous week, on November 10th. Viewership fell from 19 million viewers to just 12 million viewers, by the end of 1990.The new year didn't get any better for the series. Only the first and last episode airing in 1991 drew over 10 million viewers and the show fell under 8 million viewers three times. TWIN PEAKS was eventually pulled from the May sweeps period and aired its last two episodes as a two hour block on Monday, June 10, 1991.
