US Box Office Results: January 23 - 25, 2015

AMERICAN SNIPER was not only the top movie for the second week in a row, but it is on track to be one of the biggest movies in the past year. Adding another $64 million to its total, the Oscar nominated film has already grossed over $200 million in just 10 days of wide release. if the trend continues, it will top other 2014 movies, like GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, THE HUNGER GAMES and CAPTAIN AMERICA 2, in total domestic gross.

Three new films made the top 10, with THE BOY NEXT DOOR doing the best, at #2. The Jennifer Lopez film brought in $15 million in its first weekend and should be on track to haul in a total of over $45 million, by the time it leaves theaters. That is more the 10 times its production budget of $4 million.

The animated film STRANGE MAGIC was a disappointment, bringing in just $5.5 million. It will be lucky to gross a total of $20 million, when it is all said and done.

The big flop of the weekend was the Johnny Depp film MORTDECAI. The $60 million film grossed just $4.1 million and will struggle to collect $10 million total. This is just another, in a long string of flops by the actor. Excluding the PIRATES movies, Depp has only recorded just two live action movies (CHARLIE & CHOCOLATE FACTORY and ALICE/WONDERLAND) that have grossed over $100 million, in the past 15 years, in a staring role.
