US Box Office Results: December 21 - 23, 2018

The weekend before Christmas tuned out to be a very competitive weekend, with five new wide-releases. DC's AQUAMAN topped them all, hauling in over $67 million, in its first three days. It is the 8th best opening for a DC Comics movie, $27 million behind JUSTICE LEAGUE. The film has already made $485 million worldwide.

Second on the weekend was MARY POPPINS RETURNS, grossing $22.2 million, edging the latest TRANSFORMERS movie, BUMBLEBEE, by a little more than a million dollars. Both movies may end up as box office disappointments, doing just a poor in the international box office.

Romantic comedy, SECOND ACT, ranked seventh on the weekend, taking in  just $6.5 million, and ranking as the 22nd best opening for a Jennifer Lopez movie.

The final new release, WELCOME TO MARWEN, grossed a weak $2.4 million, for the 9th spot on the list. The film will be lucky to bring in $10 million, in its theatrical run, a quarter of its $39 million production budget.
