TV News Roundup: May 14, 2016

The broadcast networks are readying their 2016 upfronts with a slew of renewals, pickups and cancelations. ABC and FOX were the most aggressive, with CBS and The CW having few holes to fill for next season. Here are the latest moves by the five major networks.


NBC 2016-17 deals:
NBC has picked up the supernatural thriller, MIDNIGHT TEXAS, based on the novels by Charlaine Harris (TRUE BLOOD). Another drama, TIMELESS, was added to the schedule and is basically a time traveling crime drama.

The network also picked up two new comedies. MARLON, starring Marlon Wayans, as a divorced dad trying to raise his two kids. GREAT NEWS is a new sitcom about a mother/daughter working at the same news station.



ABC 2016-17 deals:
ABC has cancelled NASHVILLE, GALLAVANT, THE MUPPETS, CASTLE and THE FAMILY.

ABC finally renewed the Friday night comedy, LAST MAN STANDING, for a 6th season. The network has also ordered the new comedy, SPEECHLESS, starring Minnie Driver.



CW 2016-17 deals:
CONTAINMENT will stay as a one season, limited series and not be back for 2016-17.



FOX 2016-17 deals:
FOX has renewed the low rated drama, SLEEPY HOLLOW, for a fourth season.



CBS 2016-17 deals:
CBS picked up four new dramas and two new comedies for next season.

- BULL - A leagal drama featuring NCIS' Michael Weatherly
- McGYVER - A remake of the 80's action drama, featuring George Eads (CSI).
- PURE GENIUS - Medical Drama about a cutting-edge hospital.
- TRAINING DAY - A prequel to the theatrical film of the same name.
- THE GREAT INDOORS - Joel McHale stars in this workplace sitcom.
- MAN WITH A PLAN - Starring Matt LeBlanc in a family comedy.



Cable News:
MTV has cancelled FAKING it after three seasons.
