US Box Office Results: March 20 - 22, 2015

INSURGENT, the second movie in THE DIVERGENT SERIES, racked up $54 million in its first weekend of release, easily taking the top spot, with a $20 million advantage over last week's #1, CINDERELLA. INSURGENT opened to near identical numbers as the first movie, DIVERGENT, did, last March. If the numbers do hold true for INSURGENT, it should finish its theatrical run with around $150 million, domestically.

CINDERELLA lost over 50% of its opening weekend take, to place second this week. The 10 day domestic total for the live action film is currently $122 million. Add in the international box office and the Disney movie has crossed over $250 million, worldwide.

The new Sean Penn movie did not fare to well, placing 4th on the chart, with just $5 million for the weekend. That will limit its total take to under $15 million.

The Christian movie, DO YOU BELIEVE?, collected $4 million in just 1,300 theaters, about half or a third of those from the top 5 movies. Its per screen average was third best of those movies in wide release, behind INSURGENT and CINDERELLA. It is less than half of last year's GOD'S NOT DEAD movie.
