US Box Office Results: December 19 - 21, 2014

Four new movies made this weekend's box office chart, with the release of the third and final Hobbit film, THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES, grabbing the #1 spot, with over $56 million. It brought in more than triple the money than the #2 movie, NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: SECRET OF THE TOMB. After five days of release, the movie has hauled in over $90.5 million.

The third movie of the NIGHT OF THE MUSEUM franchise is coming in as the weakest entry, getting just over $17 million. that is about one third of what the second movie: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN, collected in its opening weekend. Eight years ago, the original move brought in over $30 million in its first weekend.

The remake of ANNIE did relatively well, considering the stiff competition of the weekend. The $65 million movie may have a tough time grossing back its production budget, but with kids out over the next couple of weeks, it should fare well, until after New Year's weekend.

The final new movie of the weekend, P.K., did extremely well, being in just 272 theaters. Its per screen average was just under $13,000, second only to THE HOBBIT movie.
